Overview

The Romanian Orthodox Church in Sofia is located in the central part of the city. It was built in 1905-1912 by the Bulgarian master Vasil Gligov, and designed by Austrian architect Friedrich Grunanger. The temple was officially consecrated in 1923. After the bombing attacks in March 1944, the dome was destroyed. In 1948, the church was restored.

The construction is a nave with three domes in the Romanian style "Brancovianu" from the XVIII century. There are three Holy Thrones - central, southern - dedicated to St. Archangel Michael and St. Archangel Gabriel and northern - of St. Archdeacon Stephen. The chandeliers are made of Viennese crystal and the floor is made of smooth mosaic. The frescoes were painted by famous masters - Vermont, Artakino and Prof. Seraphim of the Higher Academy of Arts in Bucharest. The altar, the pulpit, the bishop's throne, and other furniture are made of high-quality oak wood with precise carving. They are a donation from various temples in Romania.
