Provadia-Royak plateau
Overview
The protected area "Provadia-Royak plateau" for the protection of wild birds has been declared by Order of the Minister of Environment and Water, according to the BDA. The total area is 840 315,041 decares 160 species of birds have been identified in the region of the Provadia-Royak plateau, 36 of which are included in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria (1985). Of the species found, 68 are of European conservation importance (SPEC) (BirdLife International, 2004). The site provides suitable habitats for 52 species listed in Annex 2 of the Biodiversity Act, for which special protection measures are required. The Provadia-Royak plateau is one of the five most important places in the country important for the European Union for the conservation of the Egyptian vulture / Neophron percnopterus /, owl / Bubo bubo /, the middle spotted woodpecker / Dendrocopos medius /, the blue / Coracias garrulus /, the goat / Caprimulgus europaeus /, garden bunting / Emberiza hortulana / and hawkweed / Sylvia nisoria /. The Circaetus gallicus, the Buteo rufinus, the Aquila chrysaetos and the Hieraaetus pennatus also nest in significant numbers. A good food base and suitable resting places attract relatively large numbers of white and black storks and various species of birds of prey during spring and autumn migration. The valley of the Provadiyska River is a place with a narrow front of migration, where more than 35,000 storks and 3,000 birds of prey pass and often stop to spend the night and feed. The Provadia-Royak plateau is one of the five most important places in the country for the protection of the Egyptian vulture.
