Natural Science Museum
Overview
The Natural Science Museum in Cherni Osam, Troyan Municipality, Lovech District was founded in 1956.
It presents plant and animal species typical of the Central Balkan Mountains.
In 1956, the local biology teacher Ilia Iliev began to collect animal and plant species together with his students. For the needs of the biology classes are prepared animals that are found in the Balkan Mountains. Gradually, the collection arranged in the corridors of the school grew and in the spring of 1976 it was moved to a new building, which on January 1, 1977 became a branch of the Historical Museum in Lovech, and as an independent museum was formed in 1992.
The museum consists of three exhibition halls, which present more than 700 exhibits. The first hall presents the natural landmarks of the region and representatives of insects living in the Central Balkan Mountains, 12 species of amphibians, 15 species of reptiles, 11 species of fish and over 120 species of birds. In the second hall, which is located on the second floor are exhibited mammals from the area - wild boar, wolf, jackal, wild cat, deer, red deer, fallow deer. In the attraction hall of the museum are exhibited large mammals, there are recordings of birdsong, the roar of a bear, the howling of a wolf.
Since 2000, the museum has housed the Information Center of the Central Balkan National Park. It presents the essence of the park and the species diversity of its territory.
In 2003 a "Green Classroom" was built in the yard of the museum. It features a sword den, a wolf's lair, a rock garden with mountain flowers and the cycle of substances in nature.
The Historical Museum is part of the 100 national tourist sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union. It is below № 31.
The village of Cherni Osam is located 2 km from the Troyan Monastery, offers the opportunity to practice rural tourism and is a starting point to the hut "Ambaritsa", as well as short tourist routes. The village is the only school for mountain guides in Bulgaria.
