The Prehistoric settlement of Damyanitsa, near the village of Damyanitsa
Overview
3 km from the town of Sandanski, near the village Damyanitsa, in the area Asenitsa, remains of a large settlement from the Late Neolithic period and Chalcolithic Age were found. The area was inhabited during the Hellenistic and Roman times.
The late Neolithic settlement of Damyanitsa is one of the largest in southwestern Bulgaria. It was founded in the second half of the 6th millennium BC. (around 5200 BC) and existed until the beginning of the 5th millennium BC. (about 4900 - 4800 BC). It spreads over a huge area of over 160 decares. It is very likely that the settlement played a key role in the settlement system of the Late Neolithic in the Sandanski valley. It was also one of the centers for the production of ceramics during this period.
