Overview

The Early Christian Complex in Sandanski is an archaeological and cultural monument from Antiquity of National Importance. It includes a basilica, stoa, and ancient street from V – VI century, with outdoor exposition. Magnificent floor mosaics, now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Sandanski, were also found.

It is located in the center of the town, next to the Archeological Museum.

In the western part of the complex lies the ancient main street of the city - Cardo Maximus (oriented north-south). It was covered with well-smoothed granite blocks and, like all the streets of ancient Particopolis, was built with drainage canals. On both sides of the street stood a colonnade made of granite columns connected by arches. An inscription from the time of Emperor Caracalla can still be read on one of the columns: "Marcus Aurelius Capitonian Alexander and Terentiana Julia, as priests, "gave the columns to their hometown“.
