St. Kliment Ohridski Monument in Sofia
Overview
The monument of St. Kliment Ohridski, a follower of Saints Cyril and Methodius and patron of Sofia University, was erected in 1978 in the garden opposite Sofia University by the sculptor Lubomir Dalchev. The interesting combination of stone and metal emphasizes the head and lower arms of the clergyman.
The saint holds a torch in each hand as a symbol of the enlightenment he brings to the Bulgarian people. His suffering face shows Christian humility and piety on the one hand and wisdom and determination on the other. His body, made of stone, resembles a tree, and symbolizes the life-giving power of education and suggests that he builds a new foundation of Bulgaria, that will last as long as he and his teachers - Saints Sedmochislenitsi (Saints Cyril and Methodius and their five disciples) are remembered and honored.
