Overview

Pliska was the first capital of Bulgaria from its establishment as a country in 681 until 893  when it was moved to Veliki Preslav by Tsar Simeon I. At that time the city was one of the largest in Europe. For a long time, the exact location of the ancient capital city remained unknown.

It was not until 1904 that a column with an inscription from the time of Khan Omurtag was discovered when it became clear.

A museum has been built in the northeastern part of the old capital city, where the objects found in the area are exhibited. They are arranged chronologically according to the main periods of development of the ancient capital - pagan and Christian. Here you can see scale models of the Krum and Omurtag palaces, as well as the Great Basilica. The stamps of some Bulgarian rulers, clergymen, and other important personalities of that time are also exhibited.

The Pliska National Historical and Archaeological Reserve has been declared an archeological cultural monument of national importance. It is part of the Regional Historical Museum - Shumen, as well as one of the 100 national tourist sites in Bulgaria.
