Earth and People National Museum
Overview
The Earth and People National Museum was established in 1986 with the aim of finding, collecting, storing, and exhibiting minerals and their derivatives.
The Museum is a state cultural institute of national importance. It performs nationwide research, collection, exploration, and presentation of minerals and mineral resources as an important part of the national natural heritage. Together with the state authorities, Earth and People National Museum participates in the implementation of state policy on the study and preservation of cultural heritage. It Provides methodological and other assistance to museums from the national museum network.
The premises of the Earth and People National Museum were built in the late nineteenth century. It was then the largest building that served the Sofia Artillery Arsenal. It was one of the first buildings in the country of monolithic reinforced concrete construction with anti-earthquake walls.
The building has been renovated, declared a monument of culture, and adapted to the needs of the Earth and People National Museum. The reconstruction project was created by architect Hristo Ganchev. The interior was a project of the artist Ivan Radev, while the frescoes in the hall were painted by the artist Teofan Sokerov.
