Corylus colurna or Turkish hazel deposit
Overview
A locality of Turkish hazel near the village of Perunika, to the left of the road to Ivaylovgrad. The Turkish hazel is from the Beech family. Unlike ordinary hazel, which grows as a shrub, this one grows only as a tree and reaches 20 m in height. It occurs in two forms - Avelana and Grandulifera. It grows up to 2000 m above sea level. The locality near the village of Perunika is of the rare form Grandulifera. Below Djeleve Peak, in the mixed forest, there are several large single specimens approximately 300 years old. Due to the presence of other large trees, it is difficult to see them from afar. The locality was declared protected in 1978, occupies an area of 49 decares. There is no fence or sign. Note: Trees are difficult to find by amateurs. It is best to visit with a companion from the village. Unfortunately, at the moment only 2 people live in the neighborhood near the landmark station.
