Thracian dolmen Zhelezino village
Overview
The dolmen near the village of Zhelezino is a megalithic burial structure dating from the end of the 2nd millennium BC. The dolmen is rectangular, one-chamber, without vestibule and dromos. The burial chamber is oriented east-west.
The facility is built of large roughly shaped vertical gneiss slabs dug into a pre-prepared excavation. The northern side and western transverse slabs are well preserved, while the southern one is half-destroyed and the eastern and roof slabs are missing.
The dolmen was actively used throughout the first millennium BC, and later, during the Ottoman rule, it was turned into a sanctuary. During the archeological excavations of the site were found various ceramic fragments from the Bronze, Iron Age and the Middle Ages - iron tools, jewelry and various types of coins from the period XIII - XVIII century, which are stored in the Historical Museum in Haskovo.
Location: Zhelezino village, Ivaylovgrad municipality. 26 km outside the city. Asphalt road.
Located in the Turkish cemetery - this is the only known dolmen in the Eastern Rhodopes surrounded by broken slabs.
