Museum collection in Gurkovo
Overview
The idea for a donkey museum came when, after a 15-year hiatus, the one-of-a-kind "Bio Rally with Donkey Carts" was restored.
This authentic attraction is unique in the region and the Balkans and dates back to 1971 thanks to three young students from Gurkovo - Stoyan Bogdanov, Ivan Runtev and Iliya Todorov.
They decide to diversify the lives of young people from Gurkovo and do something where nowhere in Bulgaria and Europe (and perhaps in the world) is done - so the idea was born to organize and hold rallies, but not with cars, but with donkeys. carts, which were in abundance at that time in Gurkovo.
In the museum you can see attributes related to the breeding and use of the donkey, as well as original exhibits of tools, household items and many other items, some of them dating back to the 19th century - saddles, harnesses, reins, bags, plow, sickle, threshing board, wooden forks, pitcher rings, also men's and women's costumes, towels, home-woven aisles and other things that are already history for the people of the 21st century.
Archaeological section
On September 4, 2014, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Gurkovo as a city, an archeological section was opened in the museum collection of objects found in the region of Gurkovo - from the Thracian, Roman, Slavic, Proto-Bulgarian, Middle Ages and others.
The museum is rich in photographs, advertising materials, flags, medals.
Here, through talks given by the museum curator, and through video and print media, you can learn about the history and conduct of the bio rally, the origins, breeds, and role of donkeys in human life.
