Holy Trinity Monastery

Overview

The Novoselski Monastery is located in the Novo Selo district of the town of Apriltsi, 25 km east of the town of Troyan and 45 km south of the town of Lovech.

Transport:
The April Monastery is located a few minutes walk from the center of the Novo Selo district of the town of Apriltsi (currently a bus stop from Sofia).
History of the monastery:
The Novoselski Monastery "Holy Trinity" was founded in 1830 as a family monastery and its first inhabitants were 40 nuns from neighboring villages. During the April Uprising in 1876, Tsanko Dustabanov's detachment barricaded itself in the monastery and fought heavily with the bashibuzuka until May 9, when it was defeated. Almost the entire present-day town of Apriltsi (then the villages of Vidima, Ostrets, Novo Selo and Zla Reka), as well as the April Monastery, were destroyed and the nuns slaughtered. To this day, the bones of the slain are preserved in the chapel behind the church, which has been turned into a small museum. After the Liberation, the Novoselski monastery was rebuilt with the help of the local population.

Architecture and current state:

Although there are no clergy in the April Monastery, it is active and well maintained by the municipality. The complex includes a richly painted single-domed church, a chapel dedicated to St. Ivan Rilski, residential and farm buildings.
