Lamartine house
Overview
The house of Georgi Mavridi, also known as Lamartinova House, is a Revival house in Plovdiv. It is located on Dzhambaz Tepe, 19 Knyaz Tseretelev Street, on the corner of Zora Street in the Old Town.
It was built in 1829 - 1830 for the rich merchant Georgi Mavridi. In 1833, the French national poet and prominent politician Alphonse de Lamartine stayed there for 3 days on his return from a trip to the Orient. Since then, the home has been named after him.
Mavridi's house is among the largest symmetrical houses in the Old Town. Due to the steep terrain on which the house is built, the facade to the street is 3-storey, and to the yard - 2-storey. The ground floor has an irregular shape, which is corrected on the two upper floors by means of stepped bay windows. The distribution of the rooms is the same: 2 large rooms, a smaller room, service rooms and a lounge.
The Lamartine House has been declared a cultural monument, and since 1978 it has been used as a creative base of the Union of Bulgarian Writers. One of the rooms is set aside for a permanent exhibition dedicated to the French poet.
