Krushuna waterfalls
Overview
Krushuna Falls is a series of waterfalls near the village of Krushuna, Letnitsa Municipality, Lovech District, Northern Bulgaria. They are located 6 km from the town of Letnitsa and are famous for their picturesqueness. The waterfalls are a long travertine (bigorna) cascade, the individual steps of which are the waterfalls themselves. Krushuna waterfalls are located on the northern slope of the Devetashko plateau in the middle Fore-Balkans. The cascade was formed along the Proinovska River, which springs from the Krushuna Cave. The first and largest waterfall in the cascade is the 15-meter Praskaloto, which together with the next unnamed smaller waterfalls, are commonly called Krushuna Falls. The whole Devetashko plateau is rich in karst formations. In the immediate vicinity of the waterfalls there are many caves, some of which are Maarata, Urushka Maara, Boninska Cave and others. And 15 km west is the famous Devetashka Cave. The tourist trail starts about half a kilometer south of the village and can be reached by a road around which there are opportunities for parking. The tourist trail winds up against the river and finally reaches the first and largest waterfall in the cascade - the Sprinkler and the cave from which the river springs. There are many bridges that allow tourists to explore the area. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Krushuna monastery of hesychastic monks was located on this site, as evidenced by the preserved rock niches and cells.
