Overview

The cell school in Brashlyan was founded in 1871, after Bulgaria gained its church independence. Its foundations are laid by priest Petar Kiprilov. In it the local 12-13-year-old boys mastered the Bulgarian reading and writing and invited the priest during the church services. During the classes, the students sat on sheepskins stretched out on the ground and, in addition to a box of sand, also wrote on wax plates. They wrote the letters on the sand with a duck pen. But the priest, who was also a teacher, understood that in addition to learning the letters, the boys must be able to read and write, and the sand is not enough to write whole sentences. That's why he introduced wax plates.
