Overview

Dormition of the Mother of God is a late Renaissance Orthodox church in the Danube town of Lom, Bulgaria, the largest in the city. The church is the main church of the Lom hierarchical viceroyalty of the Vidin diocese. The temple is located in the city center. The construction of the temple began in 1863, when Lom was still in the Ottoman Empire, but was stopped by the authorities. The church was built with donations from the people of Lom in 1894-1897 and was solemnly consecrated in the summer of 1906. In 1900 the Bulgarian officer Boris Drangov and Raina Denkova Popova were married in the church.

The architect of the church is the famous Debar master Georgi Novakov Jongar. The icon painters of the church are also from Debar - Nestor Traikov and his son Danail Nestorov.

The iconostasis was made in the early twentieth century by an unknown master. His style is influenced by Russian-style icons, but is a Viennese modern type typical of Danube cities. There is a winding vine typical of Bulgarian iconostasis. The icons are large and not in the tradition of the old Bulgarian iconostasis.

In 1974 the temple was declared an architectural monument of culture.

The church was restored by the municipality of Lom under the Beautiful Bulgaria program in 2005.
