Overview

The park of Sandanski is spread over 300 000 m2 and is one of the biggest town parks in Bulgaria. Here you can find many rare Mediterranean species (trees, flowers, etc.). A large number of beautiful sand alleys bend across the park and river Sandanska Bistritsa.

The park was founded by General Todorov in 1916. About 200 plant species grow on its territory, including ancient plane trees, declared natural landmarks. There are plant species from the Far East, America, and the Mediterranean. Evergreen shrubs are planted around the water areas and rocky corners. The mild climate favors the variety of redwoods, magnolias, willows, ginkgo biloba, cork oak, yew, pomegranate, and others.

Sandanski is the sunniest town in Bulgaria with ~300 sunny days during the year. The climate is mild in autumn, winter, and spring, with positive average temperatures. The healing power of the local air and mineral water is known from Roman times. The name of the town has long been "Sveti Vrach" or "St. Healer".
