In ancient times it surrounded important public buildings / administrative, religious, etc./ At the beginning of the second half of the 14th century the ruler of Velbuzhd Konstantin Dragash turned the fortress into a beautiful palace, which was destroyed by the Turks in the 15th century.
According to an old tradition, every year on March 21 in this place, with rituals and merriment Kyustendil residents welcome the coming spring.
