Longoza Protected Area
Overview
The Longoza protected area is the former buffer zone around the Kamchia reserve. Longoza has been declared a protected area since July 12, 2007. The total area is 230 hectares, 70 of which are forest area and preserved forests, and 160 hectares are agricultural land. Characteristic of the protected area are the long forests, which have arisen on alluvial-estuarine deposits during the periodic flooding of the river Kamchia. The swampy areas along the river and the long forest are considered a natural wetland on the Black Sea coast. The relief in the area of the Kamchia reserve and in the protected area is almost flat, with slopes only in the northern parts and near the sea. As the level of the Kamchia River rises, which occurs during the spring season, the usual floods of the long forest occur. A variety of plant and animal species can be found in the Longoza protected area. From the mouth of the Kamchia River to the borders of the reserve, tourist trips are allowed, but tourists must comply with certain requirements.
