Malko Sharkovo Dam

The dam is often visited by holidaymakers and fishermen.
Malko Sharkovo Dam is located near the village of the same name in Strandzha, near the border with Turkey. The dam has an earth embankment wall and a maximum volume of 55 million cubic meters. It was built along the Popovska River. Its water volume is 40.9 million m3, covered area - 3.9 km2.
Start of operation - 1966
In 1989, the area around the dam was declared by BirdLife International as an important ornithological point of view, both nationally and on a European scale. It is a permanent resting place for wintering waterfowl: 45 species have been identified, 16 of which are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. Among the birds that overwinter near the dam are the great white-fronted goose, the mute swan, the song swan and the red-breasted goose. The dam is often visited by holidaymakers and fishermen.
Fishermen here can count on catches of cod, silver carp, whitefish, caracuda, perch, melon, mullet, maple, catfish, bleak, redfin and carp.
