School of The Seven Apostles - Slaveikovo's School

Overview

Built in 1863. Located as a prominent entrance to the ancient neighborhood of Varosha. Concerned about the future of their children, wanting to provide them with the best conditions for modern knowledge, the people of Targovishte set about building a new school in the name of the Seven Apostles - the Bulgarian educators. The initiative is of local teachers Spiridon Gramadov and Yanko Devetakov. The noble deed born of patriotic and progressive citizens of Targovishte became a fact thanks to their generosity and generosity.

Builders are the famous Tryavna masters Dimitar Sergyuv and Usta Gencho Kanev. The famous Revival educator Petko R. Slaveykov, who taught briefly in the city, took a personal part in the interior architectural design. This contribution was recognized by the people of Targovishte, for whom the school became popular as "Slaveykovoto". On July 27, 1863, the building was consecrated with great solemnity - on the day of the Seven Apostles. Personally, Slaveykov delivered a fiery and instructive speech, and in his newspaper Gaida / 1863 / he emphasized that such a "building as now has no second in all of Bulgaria". The completed school building is one of the most remarkable monuments of public construction from the era of the Bulgarian Revival. According to experts, this is the building at the beginning of the entire further Revival school construction. In the old and new times, the people of Targovishte gratefully guard and in agreement defend the "benefits and successes" of their well-ordered school. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the paths and hopes of teachers and parents intersected here with the urge for knowledge and progress of countless generations of students.
In 1963, the old school building took on a new public mission. It has been turned into a museum. The graphic image of the Slaveykovo school today is an emblem of the Regional Historical Museum in Targovishte. Since 1971, the building has been a national cultural monument. It is the center of a museum complex at the beginning of the ancient Revival Varosh, an impressive reality and an introduction to the atmosphere of the fascinating and impressive historical destiny of Targovishte.
Today in the Slaveykovo school are presented temporary expositions of the Regional Historical Museum - Targovishte.
