Church of the Assumption in Ruse
Overview
Assumption or Holy Mother of God is a church in the city of Ruse, Bulgaria. On April 22, 1928, architect Sava Bobchev was commissioned to prepare a project for a church. It was decided to call the new church "Assumption of the Blessed Virgin" with the patron saint's day August 28/15. The foundation stone was laid by Metropolitan Mikhail Dorostolski and Chervenski on September 23, 1928. A few days later, construction began. It lasted until the autumn of 1930, when the church was covered and crosses were placed on the dome and the bell tower, designed by architect Bobchev. In 1933 the construction of an iconostasis of linden wood by the State Art Furniture (Carpentry School) began according to a pre-approved project. The icons were assigned to Professor Stefan Ivanov - 20 pieces, and to Mr. Zhelyazkov - 3 pieces, which at that time painted the Cathedral. Todor Yankov painted 14 icons. A bell weighing 442 kg, 2 large candlesticks, medium and small, and a chandelier were also ordered. The consecration of the church was performed by Metropolitan Michael on August 28, 1934. Article / - Assumption of the Virgin. The church has dimensions: width - 12 meters, length - 26 meters, total covered area 312 m2. The dome has a diameter of 9.50 meters. The baptistery and the office were housed in a remote private house for some time. In order not to pay rent and to be in the temple, 2 rooms were built next to the entrance under the bell tower. The completed project by arch. Neycho Yordanov does not significantly damage the appearance of the building. The extension was completed in October 1948. The frescoes were painted by Prof. Georgi Bogdanov, Prof. Stefan Ivanov and Prof. Haralampi Tachev. In 2002 the frescoes were mainly restored and the floor of the temple was covered with special panels.
