Church of St. Nicholas, Melnik
Overview
It is located in southeastern Melnik, near the center of the town, and is a cultural monument of national importance.
The church was built in the XIII century. It is a medieval Byzantine church, only partially preserved. In the Middle Ages, it was a small single-nave building, and over the years it has been rebuilt and expanded several times.
In 1895 the church was burnt down, but at the beginning of the 20th century, it was rebuilt by the National Institute of Cultural Monuments.
It shelters unique icons, outstanding pieces of art, masterpieces of the painters from Melnik and the surrounding villages.
