The park has an area of ​​21,772 ha. was declared as such in 2002. It is located on the ridges and northern slopes of the Shipka and Tryavna mountains and on parts of the adjacent Predbalkan. Nearly 80% of its area is forest. The area includes the springs of the Yantra River and the main tributaries in its upper part. The park includes settlements from the municipalities of Gabrovo, Tryavna and Maglizh.

Most of the animals that are found in Bulgaria are also in "Bulgarka". Among them are bald eagle, small hawk, snipe, bear, otter, wolf, wild boar, red deer, roe deer and others.

By car or bus from Gabrovo, Tryavna and Plachkovtsi you can reach many starting points on walking, cycling and eco routes. A railway line passes through the park, which can also be used as a starting point.
