Overview

The old elm is a thousand-year-old tree in the town of Sliven - one of the symbols of the town. It is of the species Elm carpinifolia - a deciduous deciduous tree with a well-developed root system. It is one of the few remaining from the Great Bulgarian Forest (Magna Silva Bulgarika), which stretched from the Rhodopes to the Black Sea. The specimen in Sliven is over 1000 years old (estimated to be around 1100).

The millennial tree is located in the center of the city at the beginning of the main pedestrian promenade and is huge, majestic and beautiful. Part of its trunk is cemented to preserve it.

The old elm is connected with the history of Sliven since the time of Turkish slavery:
