Overview

The first archeological and historical researches of the region of Tsar Kaloyan were made in 1914 by Karel Shkorpil, who toured and described the valley of Rusenski Lom. Historical notes are also found in the research of Anani Yavashov - researcher and historian of the Razgrad region. During the period 1974-79 a detailed study of the area was made by a large expedition led by Ara Margos. A detailed study of the population and in particular of the Kapan ethnic group with which the city is inhabited has been made for many years by Professor Ivan Koev.

Traces of various cultures have been found in the area. The settlement and burial mounds are Thracian. Remains of a fortification and a marble relief of the goddess of agriculture and fertility Ceres give information about life during the Roman rule. Jewelry, household items and construction materials typical of the First Bulgarian State were found in the Rasate area. From the Second Bulgarian State are carved rock monasteries and hermitages "Church", "Kalugeritsa", "Torlashki Monastery", as well as a find of silver coins from the time of Tsar Ivan Shishman.
