Regional Historical Museum Underground Mining Museum, Pernik
Overview
An underground mining museum is unique for the Balkan Peninsula. It is located in two of the preserved galleries of the first underground mine, which operated from 1891 to 1966.
Visitors have the opportunity to follow the history of coal mining in an authentic mining atmosphere.
The thirty exposure chambers monitor the development of coal mining from manual mining, through the export of coal by horse to modern mechanized complexes.
In one of the chambers is an iconostasis of the heavenly patron of miners St. Ivan Rilski, with whom one of the oldest legends about the "Old Mines" is connected.
