Overview

The Regional Historical Museum "Academician Yordan Ivanov" was established in 1897. It is one of the oldest and largest museums in Bulgaria. It is named after the prominent Bulgarian historian, archaeologist and folklorist Yordan Ivanov. On November 3, 1897, the first museum collection was opened at the Kyustendil Pedagogical School, the creation of which was approved by prescription № 17323 from December 1, 1897 of the Ministry of Education. It is the first in Southwestern Bulgaria and the third school museum in the country, after those of the Aprilov High School in Gabrovo and the Stara Zagora Boys' Three-Grade School. At the end of 1907, the Regulations of the museum at the Chitalishte "Bratstvo" were adopted, which began to function on January 1, 1908, as the second museum in the city with curator teacher Georgi Zlatevski. The program of the museum envisages the opening of the sections: Chitalishte work; home life; housing and household goods, livelihoods, costumes, communications and trade; history and archeology, geography; animals and minerals. On August 6, 1944, the Community center Museum grew into a city museum with a gallery. Since 1960 it has had the status of a Regional Historical Museum. Since 1992 it has been named after Yordan Ivanov. By Decree of the Council of Ministers it was transformed into a Regional Historical Museum with headquarters in Kyustendil and carries out cultural and educational activities in the districts of Kyustendil, Pernik and Blagoevgrad.
