Overview

The exhibition was opened in 2006. Finds from a sunken prehistoric settlement, a sunken ship and anchors are on display. The history of the town of Kiten from its creation to the present day has been recreated. The exhibition shows artifacts found during archeological excavations of the Urdoviza fortress wall. The prehistory presented in the exhibition is dedicated to the sunken prehistoric settlements found along the Bulgarian coast. Such prehistoric settlements from the end of the Stone-Copper Age (5th millennium BC) and the Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC), which due to the change of the coastline and rising sea level at present are under water, we find along the entire length of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. A parallel is made between materials from the Early Bronze Age from Kiten and Varna. The great similarity in the findings is interesting, which means that we are talking about the same population and the same culture. The tools showcase tools, of particular importance is the open bone material, the analysis of which shows what animals inhabited our lands during the existence of the settlements. The vertical stakes from the construction of the prehistoric dwellings have been preserved from the settlements. The ancients drove sharpened stakes into the ground, entwined them with branches, which they coated on both sides with clay. The floor of their homes was also made of compacted clay. The antiquity presented in the exhibition is dedicated to the development of the ancient anchor. The first exposed anchor shows how man started from the most basic - to make a groove on a stone around which he tied a rope and used this stone as an anchor. He then found that if he drilled holes in the stone, tied the rope through one, and passed wooden stakes through the others, these stakes could perform the function of anchor horns. The next stage is the making of the anchor from wood, which, however, is a light material and in order to sink it needs additional weight provided by a stone cross-section called a rod. Curious are the analyzes of the stone from which the stone anchors and stone poles are made and their comparison with the rocks on our coast. Research shows that almost all stone anchors are made of local stone, while few of the stone rods have an analogue with the rocks on our coast. The next step is to make the lead rods. The various known types of stocks that we find along the Black Sea coast are shown.
