Overview

Morovitsa Cave is located near the village of Glozhene, not far from the town of Teteven. It is one of the great Bulgarian caves. The total length of the cave is 3250 m and its depth is 150 m. Objects left by primitive people have been found in it. The finds are stored in the historical museum in Teteven. Exhibits can also be seen in the museum of the nearby Glozhene Monastery. The name of the Morovitsa cave comes from an old legend, according to which the underground forests were inhabited by an evil spirit that plagued the people who entered the cave.

More than 100 years ago, a cave bear's tooth was found in the lobby, launching a series of drillings that revealed pottery, flint tools, bones and horns. Assessing the value of what was found for historical science, further research of the Morovitsa cave continued. The finds show that in addition to the Late Paleolithic, the cave was inhabited during the Neolithic (Neolithic) and Eneolithic (Stone - Copper Age). Today the cave is inhabited by many species of bats typical of our country.

The first 320 meters of the cave are accessible to tourists with caution. The cave is two-storey - a 57-meter precipice, divided into 2 plummets leads to the second floor.
