Overview

Akin is a long and narrow cape of the Black Sea, at the northern end of the peninsula of Accra, 1.5 km away in the Burgas Bay. Other old names on the nose are Ativolo and St. Nicholas. It is located southeast of Bourgas, 6.5 km northwest of Sozopol and near the Naval Base Atia. To the southeast is the town of Chernomorets, Burgas region.

The coast of Akin is a cliff with heights ranging from 10 to 20 meters above sea level, built of Senonian and volcanic rocks.

The name Akin is of ancient Greek origin and literally means "short, curved Persian sword". The Greeks named the nose this way because of the cunning and armament of their centuries-old enemies - the Persians. Probably, this name is connected with the surface rocks "Ati-volo" (from the town: "Opposite land"), popular with the name Malacci, located in front of the promontory. The waters near these rocks hide a trap - the safe fairway passes closer to the shore than to the rocks, which is unusual in maritime practice.

Cape Akin is the place of death of 15 Bulgarian sailors from the crew of the torpedo boat "Smeli", caught in a severe storm on May 19, 1943. In 1998, a memorial was erected on the cape in memory of those killed. At that time, an order was issued by the Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, the Bulgarian warships sailing in this area, with the hoisting of the naval flag to pay tribute to the dead sailors of the "Smeli".
