Batova area
Overview
The Batova Protected Area is located north of the city of Varna and covers the Batova River valley and most of the Frangen Plateau, including the coastline from Albena to Golden Sands and its adjacent sea area. At the mouth of the Batova River is the Baltata Reserve, which preserves a natural forest and wetland habitats. 184 species of birds have been identified in the region, 70 of which are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The place is located on the West Black Sea migratory route Via Pontica, and over the valley of the Batova River gather three streams of migratory birds coming from Dobrudja. The most concentrated flow of migrating storks and pelicans in Northeastern Bulgaria passes through Batova, and due to its importance for over 30 species of migrating soaring birds, Batova is defined as a place with a narrow front of migration of global importance.
