Kyuntu Kapu

Overview

According to the provisions of the Berlin Peace Treaty of 1878, all fortresses in the Principality of Bulgaria were destroyed. Only the Kyuntu Kapu Gate and its iron-clad door are left of the Ruschushka Fortress. Experts believe that this is how the Bulgarian medieval gates looked like - clad in iron. Kyuntu Kapu Fortress Gate - literally ("The Door with the Pipeline") can be seen at the exit from Ruse at the bridge, called by the people of Ruse "Snail". This is one of the gates of the Ottoman fortress Ruschuk, near which passed a pipeline (Kunt) - part of the city's water supply system. This aqueduct fed the fountain in the yard of St. George's School (now Angel Kanchev Primary School) - the only surviving 18th century fountain in Ruse.
