Peristera Fortress
Overview
Peristera Fortress is located 800 meters north of the center of Peshtera, at the very end of the city, to the left of the road to the town of Pazardzhik. In the center of the place there is an older complex of stones of a probable Thracian sanctuary. The citadel of the fortress spreads over 3 decares, and the second belt of fortress walls encloses 12 decares. There is a third, outermost belt. The hill on which Peristera is located is known as St. Friday. The name of the fortress comes from Greek and means "dove". In the highest part of the hill are grouped stones of different sizes, one of which is in the shape of a dove. This fact gives archaeologists reason to believe that an ancient Thracian sanctuary probably existed on the same site.
The fortress walls are 253 m long and enclose a space of 2895 sq.m. Prior to the restoration, they were preserved at a height of up to 2.60 m. There are six towers along the fortress wall.
