Haskovo Prison

Overview

After the prison closed, his archives disappeared. When the building itself disappeared six decades later, it erased part of the city's past. Like every Bulgarian district center, in the past Haskovo also had its own penitentiary institutions. This is exactly the role played by the local prison. Built in 1895 on the western outskirts of the city, it is preserved and functioning until 1956. Executions and other severe punishments were carried out on its territory, even in the years when a neighborhood was already formed around its outer walls. After its closure, the building was declared a cultural monument and until 2016 it is among the most interesting public buildings in the past with Haskovo. A museum exposition of the District Historical Museum is arranged in part of the prison. With the changes in the early 90's, the exhibition ceased to exist. In 2016, the prison was demolished, to the surprise of most of the city's citizens. All that remains are the memories of him, a few documents and the song composed in the 1930s, sung by the family members and the kids on the streets of Haskovo - "... In Haskovo, in the prison of criminals in the yard".
