Overview

The impressive building in the city center still bears the name of its donor. It was built in 1844 for a school building that can accommodate the growing number of Sevlievo children willing to study. The funds for it were provided entirely by Hadji Stoyan Nikolov, a city leader and a wealthy merchant, who in 1925 also donated funds for the construction of a cell school. The worthy Bulgarian determined part of his own yard, set aside about 60,000 groschen from his personal funds, and in 1842 construction began. In 1844 the large and representative building was generally completed.

One of the first Bulgarian secular schools in the Bulgarian lands, Hadjistoyan's school also has its worthy first teacher. For the first school year Hadji Stoyan invited the young Petko Rachev Slaveykov. The training was conducted according to the modern mutual teaching method, the young students studied Bulgarian and sacred history, arithmetic, singing, gymnastics and other subjects, took an annual public exam. For decades, generations of young people from Sevlievo received their education here, organized and conducted the April Uprising in the Sevlievo region, and then built a free Bulgaria. After the Liberation, the construction of new, more modern school buildings began in the city and the Hadjistoyan school received a new purpose. Since the middle of the 20th century it has been the main building of the Sevlievo Historical Museum. Today, the permanent museum expositions "Archeology" and "The Sevlievo Region during the Revival" are located here. Among the exhibits in the Archeology exhibition there are valuable specimens, some of which are often included in national exhibitions that present our history and culture outside Bulgaria. Selected exhibits of our Revival art, as well as sacred relics from the time of the struggle for national liberation arouse admiration in the Vazrazhdane Hall. In a special hall, the museum curators exhibit temporary exhibitions on various occasions and topics, which provoke the interest of their visitors from near and far.
