Overview

The need for a museum collection in Botevgrad, then Orhanie, was shared for the first time in the local newspaper in 1927. The local cultural community set the task of creating an "archaeological museum" in the town.

Practically, the beginning of the museum work in Botevgrad was set by Asen Stefanov, director of the local high school, in the school year 1936/37. With the help of teachers, students, and parents many documentaries, and ethnographic materials were collected. They were arranged in one of the classrooms, and the collection was opened on May 24, 1937.

Over the years, the collection has been enriched and expanded. In 1952, it was declared a state museum.

Since 2011, the Botevgrad Historical Museum has been moved to the renovated building of the former Courthouse. The museum shelters original documents, photos, and belongings exceeding 15,000 exhibits.

The church school in the village of Bozhenitsa is a branch museum of the Historical Museum in Botevgrad.
