Overview

The organized study of the past of Popovo and the region began in 1927, when the Archaeological Society was founded in the town. With the collected by him, mainly archeological monuments in 1929, an exposition was arranged in a shop ceded by the Municipality. It lasted for a short time and the antiquities were transferred and stored in the local community center "St.St. Cyril and Methodius". On the ground floor of the same on September 8, 1957 was opened a museum exhibition tracing the history of the Popovo region from antiquity to the middle of the twentieth century. In 1978 a new exposition was arranged, but already in the building in which the museum is located today. It was built in 1883 for district administration, since 1920 it has housed the newly opened Popovo High School "Hristo Botev". It was donated to the museum in 1975. Since 1991 the Chitalishte museum collection has the status of a Municipal History Museum. Its current exhibition was opened on March 2, 1995. It is located on an area of 350 sq.m. The museum fund includes nearly 30,000 units, of which nearly 2,500 are on display. In another building - the house of Mara Taseva, hanged in 1942 for political activity - is the ethnographic exhibition "From the village of Popovo to the town of Popovo." The attic floor of the former Income Building, built in 1910 since 2009, has been donated to the museum and houses the Kiril Maiski Art Gallery. The museum conducts archeological excavations of the late antique fortress "Kovachevsko Kale", the ancient settlement with a necropolis near the village of Gorsko Ablanovo and the Thracian tomb near the village of Gagovo. Periodically holds scientific conferences, reports and announcements, which are published in proceedings.
